BJP state women’s wing with Anna Hazare

BJP Mahila Morcha national vice president Sardha Devi during a visit to Dimapur on Thursday, August 18.

DIMAPUR, AUGUST 18 (MExN): The Bharatiya Janata Party is certainly riding hard the Anna Hazare led anti-corruption wave to stir up public support against the UPA government. As declared following the high profile arrest of Gandhian activist Hazare by the Delhi police on August 16, the main opposition party at the centre is trying to make its displeasure and presence felt in almost every state of the country.
The party’s Mahila Morcha (women wing) national vice president Sardha Devi, who is in charge of the north east, was in the state on Thursday, August 18. The main objective of the visit was to mobilize support for Anna Hazare’s tussle with the UPA government to pass the anti-corruption or the Jan Lokpal Bill.
Following a meeting with party workers at Naga Shopping Arcade, Dimapur, where the state BJP unit office is located, Devi staged a brief public ‘dharna’, shouting anti-government slogans alongwith Nagaland Mahila Morcha workers.
Earlier at a media briefing, Devi lambasted the UPA government’s action against Hazare terming it as unconstitutional and undemocratic. “They’re (UPA) trying to misguide the people but they’ll not succeed.” It is public knowledge what the ruling government is doing is wrong, she said.
“Why is the (UPA) government scared of passing the Jan Lokpal Bill?” “The BJP is against corruption,” she said adding, “We must root out corruption.”
Besides, she stated that another concern of the BJP Mahila Morcha is the uplift of women. The women wing’s main aim is to empower the people, particularly women. The focus is on revitalizing the ‘Self help Groups’, which she asserted is decaying in those states where the BJP is not in power. “Our aim is to strengthen the SHGs.”
Devi is scheduled to visit Arunachal Pradesh on Friday. It will be followed by Manipur and Mizoram.
State BJP Mahila Morcha president, Rosy Yanthan said the state unit is fully behind Anna Hazare in his fight against corruption.
