Boost for farmers; Chathe irrigation project commissioned

KOHIMA, JULY 28 (DIPR): Commemorating the Year of Farmers 2006, the state Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio today commissioned the Chathe M.I Project at Chumukedima. Addressing the handing over function after commissioning the project, Neiphiu Rio expressed gratitude to the Irrigation & Flood Control Department for implementing the project within the given time frame. He said that the DAN government is concerned about the well-being of the people in general and the farmers in particular. He added that many such projects will be implemented in the days to come. Rio said that farmers comprise more than 80% of the population in the state and the government is targeting the farmers to boost the state economy. 

The Chief Minister added that the Nagas are still a consumer’s society and efforts should be made to translate it into a producer’s society. He urged the farmers to take advantage of the ‘Year of Farmers’ under which a lot of development activities are being taken up throughout the year in all the districts. He said that with the changing times, farmers should opt for modern technologies and machineries to double the harvest. He called upon the farmers to attain self-sufficiency and maintain the projects implemented by the government.

Parliamentary Secretary, Irritation and Flood Control, M.C Konyak speaking as the Guest of Honour, said the emphasis of the state is to enhance agricultural productivity because unless the agricultural productivity is improved, the economic condition of a society is threatened. Asserting that agricultural productivity cannot be improved without irrigation facilities, M.C Konyak urged the farmers to maintain the water-canal and co-operate with the Government for greater benefits. He also handed over the Project Certificate to the President of the Water Users’ Association. 

Presenting the Technical Report, Superintendent, Irrigation & Flood Control Engineer T. Yanger said that the execution of the Chathe M.I Project commenced in November 2005 and was completed in July 2006. The work was executed by Ex. Engineer Dimapur Division, Irritation & Flood Control Nagaland at an estimated cost of Rs. 2,99,86,800/-.

He said that through the implementation of the project, assured irrigation facilities can be made available to the vast cultivatable areas in the villages of Seithekiema, Aoyim, Showba, Chumukedima, Khelhozhe and other adjoining villages, thereby design cropping can also be introduced for multiple cropping as irrigation is ensured against the vagaries of natural rainfall.

Short speeches were also delivered by President, Water Users Association Kevisekho, Ex MLA Lhouviser Medozie, GB Noklulemba, Deputy Commissioner Dimapur, K.N. Ngullie. Minister for Transport Imtilemba Sangtam also exhorted the gathering. The programme was chaired by Addl. Secretary, Irrigation & Flood Control Department, Neihu C. Thur.

The Chief Minister was accompanied by his Cabinet colleagues, Parliamentary Secretaries, Senior Government dignitaries and other government officials.
