Dimapur, April 5 (MExN): The Ralan Area Students’ Union (RASU) today alleged that the CRPF which is deployed along the Assam-Nagaland border area as a neutral has violated the understanding between the Governments of Assam and Nagaland by handing over two arrested innocent persons to the Sarupathar Police Station.
A press statement received here from the RASU General Secretary, Merithung Ovung, while pointing out that the ‘so-called’ neutral force, the CRPF, has never been neutral and always harassed the Naga people in the border areas, giving a detailed story of the incident behind the arrest of the innocent victims by the CRPF.
The release stated that the two persons, Yanbemo Patton and Renpenthung, were arrested simply because of their being at the wrong place at the wrong time.
The release stated that Yanbemo Patton, who is an old man, was arrested while he was showing some Naga activist for identification and detection of illegal migrants settled in Naga areas. The release stated that the CRPF, on being misinformed by the illegal Bangladeshis, chased them and arrested only the old man as the two others ran away. The other person was arrested while he was stranded on the road after his bike was snatched by the two fleeing persons.
The release stated that both the arrested persons were handed over to the Sarupathar Police Station, in violation of the understanding reached between Assam and Nagaland whereby Nagas who are arrested by the CRPF for whatever reasons have to be handed over to the Nagaland Police and not to Assam police. The release further stated that the two persons have been thoroughly beaten by the police personnel at the Sarupathar police station and added that they are now lodged in Golaghat District Jail.
‘Bring back the two persons’
The RASU after briefing about the incident appealed to the Commissioner of Nagaland, TN Manen to send the Wokha DC to immediately bring back the two persons. The RASU warned that failing to do so would compel them to take the matters into their own hands.
The RASU also appealed to the concerned authority to establish a police station at Yanpha or Old Ralan for addressing this type of problems and at the same time appealed to the Government of Nagaland to remove the CRPF check post at Yanpha as it is causing untold harassment to the common man.
The RASU further appealed for the kind intervention of the Lotha Students’ Union and the Naga Students’ Federation with regard to this matter.
