Kohima, February 24 (MExN): A seminar on Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) today called for a coordinated effort to properly implement the act in the state while agreeing that the people are still being deprived and exploited.
Delivering the keynote address, Additional Director General, Directorate of Field Publicity, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, A. Lassa described the act, a flagship programme of the UPA Government, as a people’s act and a revolutionary act aimed at alleviating poverty that surpasses all other welfare schemes. Lamenting that many are still being deprived and exploited, she emphasized on the need for a concerted effort to properly implement the act. If properly implemented, this is going to remove the geography of poverty and every single household will live a dignified life, the ADG said. She also stressed that the iron curtain between the rural poor and the rich has to come down. Further, she informed that the Directorate of Field Publicity has been empowering the people through various initiatives. If the act is properly implemented in the state, Nagaland will rise and shine, she added.
Earlier, Assistant Director of the state Rural Development department, Gwasinlo Thong, who chaired the programme informed that the MGNREGA is one of the most successful programmes and that Nagaland is comparatively doing fairly well in implementation of the act.
