Dimapur, April 21 (MExN): Captain N Kenguruse MVC Basketball Tournament will be held from April 22-24 at Xavierite College Campus and Assam Rifles Ground in Jalukie.
Organised under the aegis of 36 Assam Rifles, over 12 Boys’ and Girls’ teams are taking part in the tournament, informed a press release received here.
The tournament is an invitation to rejuvenate the ‘Spirit of commitment and love for the Nation’ shown by late Capt Kenguruse, it said.
Born in July 15, 1974 at Nerhema Village, late Kenguruse completed his schooling at St Xavier School, Jalukie and graduated from Kohima Science College.
He served as a teacher at the Government Higher Secondary School, Kohima from 1994 to 1997 before being commissioned into the Army Service Corps of Indian Army in 1998, the release said.
As junior commander in the Rajputana Rifles battalion, late Kenguruse was known for his bravery and supreme sacrifice made during the ‘Kargil War’ in 1999, it added.
Then a junior commander in the Rajputana Rifles battalion deployed in Drass sector, late Kenguruse was made the commander of the Ghatak platoon in which only the most physically fit and motivated soldiers join, the release said.
On June 28, 1999, he successfully led his troops to an assigned mission by taking out, among others, a strategic machine gun post held by the and “neutralising the enemy position,” it said.
The troops attributed their success to the unfaltering leadership and daring action of late Kenguruse, who gave his life in the process, it added.
“Martyred at the age of 25 years, Capt Kenguruse was given the nation’s second highest gallantry award, ‘Maha Vir Chakra’ for his raw courage, indomitable spirit and supreme sacrifice,” the release further stated.
