Centre approves Food Park for Nagaland

TO PROVIDE the basic facilities necessary for establishing and enhancing food processing industry and offer assistance to the units, a Food Park has been approved to be set up at Dimapur for the State of Nagaland by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Government of India.

This follows the assurance given by Subodh Kant, Union Minister for Food Processing Industries while on his visit to Nagaland on the occasion of the North East Expo Meet at Dimapur March last.

According to available sources, the expense that would be incurred in the creation of the proposed park in Nagaland has been estimated at approximately Rs. 12.40 Crore. With this latest addition, the number of Food Parks sanctioned in the North Eastern Region have gone up to six, one each in state of Assam, Mizoram, Tripura and two in Manipur including the latest proposed in Nagaland. The proposal to set up the Food Park in states of Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Sikkim are yet to receive a nod, it was informed.     

Union Minister Subodh Kant had highlighted the central government’s willingness to set up such a facility.

While elucidating the Ministry’s Plan Schemes and Programmes to upgrade the present trend of industries he had observed that setting up of such food parks would be beneficial in the sense that the external economies of scale shall be available to the units being set up in such parks.  

He urged that the implementation of such food parks should be accelerated so that they would emerge as food processing hubs as designed and further appealed to improve upon the already existing scheme for Food Parks in the entire North East region. 

“We have formulated a revised scheme of Mega Food Park which we have taken up with Planning Commission for their approval” the Minister for Food Processing had said. 

Also while disclosing the Center’s plan to assist in setting up of at least one Food Park and one modern unit in each of the Parliamentary Constituencies in the entire country, he had assured that the ministry would take up the matter with all the Members of Parliament and has them involved in this undertaking.
