With the programme of Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) instituted by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in 2009, the election department of Nagaland too has been actively campaigning over the years in collaboration with the government departments, media and NGOs to achieve the Commission’s goals in increasing electoral participation through voter registration and turnout, increasing qualitative participation in terms of ethical and informed voting and providing continuous electoral and democracy education to the people.
ECI directs all registered electors to ensure qualitative participation in terms of ethical and informed voting on day of poll as a responsibility. Presently, Nagaland has high turnout percentages in elections which are more of symptoms of manipulations, malpractices rather than fetching credit to the state.
Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Nagaland appealed all government departments and credible civil societies to join hands with election department and partners to carry out the work of voter education and awareness campaigns all over Nagaland covering all polling stations voter by voter resulting in a population that is well informed on all aspects of electoral participation and motivated to participate in the process of elections and democratic governances.
Responding to the call, some active partners/organizations namely the NBCC, ACAUT, Chakhesang Baptist Church Council, and the Langpangkong Kaketshir Mungdang Clean Election Committee (Tuli Sub Division), Nagaland Law Students’ Federation, All Sumi Students Union, YouthNet, the Naga Blog etc have launched grassroots level campaign on voter’s education/awareness for enhanced and qualitative electoral participation.
The CEO appealed to all government departments, media, church organizations, NGOs including students’ communities to launch campaigns that inspires/motivates the citizens to avail all opportunities to register/delete ineligible entries, rectify errors, if any, and strengthen their electoral participation as a responsibility and making it truly reflective of people’s choices and aspirations.
