CGBU urges for smooth execution of road, rail projects

Dimapur, January 28 (MExN): The Chakhroma GBs' Union (CGBU) has extended support for smooth execution of the project for improvement of Dimapur portion of National Highway 29, which was launched by the Chief Minister on January 17, 2018.

The union in a statement lauded the commitment given by the Chief Minister to initiate two-laning from New Field Check Gate to Zion Hospital and four-laning from Zion Hospital to Chumukedima with quality workmanship.

“Good roads are indispensable necessity for development but sadly ignored in our state for too long. Hence the initiation of improving the Dimapur portion of the NH 29 is a much welcomed step,” said the statement from CGBU general secretary, Atso Gwizan and president, Thepfukedo Kuotsu.

It requested all to extend cooperation for the completion of the works without any hindrance.

“The CGBU is also perturbed to learn that there are some landowners who are yet to dismantle and remove their properties along the ongoing four-laning between Dimapur and Kohima, despite receiving due compensation,” the union said.

CGBU maintained that failure to remove the properties by the landowners are posing hindrance to the early completion of the work and resulting in inconvenience to commuters.

“It is a customary practice among the Nagas that there should be no blockade for roads and waterways and people freely give their land for construction of roads and canals.” The CGBU as such appealed to the landowners within Chakhroma area to cooperate and see that the works are carried out on time. “If we want to see our state develop, we are duty bound to cooperate with the authorities,” it urged.

With regard to certain villages stalling the laying of railway line from Dimapur to Kohima, the CGBU noted that the rate of compensation has been settled and duly paid to the landowners; however, the villages concerned are stopping the works citing inadequate compensation.

“The Union is of the view that once compensation is settled and paid, there is no reason to agitate now and it is not the practice of the Nagas who are known for honesty and who honours and keeps their commitments made,” the statement read. Therefore, the union appealed to the villages to reconsider their stand and allow the developmental activities to proceed smoothly for the benefit of all Nagas.

The CGBU further urged the respective councils of the villages situated near the highway to extend their cooperation as and when the work commences in their area and see that the works are not stalled by few individuals.
