Chakhesang community prepares for Sukrenye

Phek Village | January 13 : With the approaching of the much awaited Chakhesang’s premier festival Sukrenye which falls on January 15, almost the entire community is engaged in hectic preparation for the forthcoming festivals at their respective places.
Sukrenye which can be split in two words ‘Sukre’ which mean purification of oneself- a child where his father recites a ritual by blessings upon his son to be a fortune person in his future course of life; ‘Nye’ meaning observation of festival, hence in short ‘Sukrenye’ can be termed a festival of purification.
The day which falls on January 15 annually for the Chakhesang in the government calendar usually extends to two more weeks or a month so as to complete the entire process of the rituals.
With the coming of ‘Sukrenye’, people from all corners of the community make out leisure time to ease from the heavy agricultural works. To enhance the spirit of ‘Sukrenye’ and to promote the aged-old traditional and cultural values, Phek Villagers are making a colorful preparation for the said festivals. Ten traditional huts have been built by 10 different units, where several cultural spotlights will be presented apart from the various competitions being set aside to mark the festivals.
According to the incharge, Thuputhiyi S. Venuh, almost the entire youths were engage practicing traditional games and indigenous songs, adding every evening experience with different tunes from all corners of the village.
Beginning the year 2011 with premier tribal festivals, Chakhesangs will be observing more festivals on monthly basis which all bears an important significance.
