Chakhesangs have about 300 gazetted officers spread over 47 departments in the state. But there are still no officers in 17 departments. There were only 2 Circle Officers and one Area Superintendent from the Chakhesang tribe when the state of Nagaland was formed 42 years ago in 1963, MLA Deo Nukhu said.
In the past, only a few educated people struggled and managed to get into gazetted posts with much difficulty during the early decades after statehood. Under central government service, the tribe has not produced any IAS officers till date.
According to state civil list (April 2005), the tribe has 2 IPS officers with 7 other officers in the central government service. In the state government services, it has 14 NCS officers, 16 NPS officers, 20 NSS officers, 37 Engineering service (including Diploma), 20 medical services, 38 education services, 15 veterinary services while 116 are from other departments.
Nukhu said the spirit of competition and struggle is lacking in our present generation of educated youth in spite of the fact that the number of educated unemployed youth are growing substantially year by year. He said that Chakhesangs did not come under the category of Backward Tribe until 1978.
It was until late LP Singh the then Governor of Nagaland, conducted a serious study into the Naga tribes in matter of representing employment in various government departments; and having found inadequate representation in many departments by some backward tribes, a notification was later issued by the state for reservation of seats for declared backward tribes including Chakhesang. Nukhu felt that the Chakhesang Gazetted Officers Forum should see and help that the reservation policy is protected in the interest of the society.
