Chakhesang Students’ Union announces 'non-cooperation to Indian Armed Forces operating under AFSPA'

Phek, May 13 (MExN):  The Chakhesang Students’ Union (CSU) has directed all its affiliated and subordinate units to extend "non-cooperation and abstain from any association with the Indian Armed Forces operating under the purview of the AFSPA."

The direction from the CSU came against the backdrop of extension of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from April 1 in parts of Nagaland by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

“This unjust extension only exacerbates the fear and unrest already prevalent in our state,” the CSU stated in a press release issued by its President Pfhülo Sara and General Secretary Kuzoto Swuro.

As per the union, the AFSPA grants “unbridled power to the armed forces deployed in ‘disturbed areas,’ leading to a flagrant disregard for human rights and the rule of law.”

The Act perpetuates a climate of fear and intimidation among the people, undermining the very fabric of the society, it added.
Accordingly, the CSU expressed its vehement condemnation of the extension of the AFSPA in Nagaland and issued the non-cooperation directive.

“We stand in solidarity with our fellow citizens who have borne the brunt of its oppressive measures for far too long,” it added.  The CSU also affirmed that it stands united in its “refusal to comply with any directives issued under this draconian law.”

Further asserting that it is imperative to restore dignity, justice, and respect for human rights in Nagaland, the Union also called for unity and strong resolve of the people to combat oppression and injustice, and work towards a future where the rights and freedoms of all citizens are safeguarded.

The union also called upon the Government of the day to heed the voices of the people and repeal AFSPA without delay.

In a notification on March 27, the MHA declared the districts of Dimapur, Niuland, Chümoukedima, Mon, Kiphire, Noklak, Phek and Peren districts as  ‘disturbed area’ under Section 3 of the AFSPA for a period of six months with effect from April 1, 2024, “unless withdrawn earlier.”

Further, Khuzama, Kohima North, Kohima South, Zubza and Kezocha police stations in Kohima District; Mangkolemba, Mokokchung-I, Longtho, Tuli, Longchem and Anaki ‘C’ police stations in Mokokchung District; Yanglok police station in Longleng District; Bhandari, Champang and Ralan police stations in Wokha District; and Ghatashi, Pughoboto, Satakha, Suruhuto, Zunheboto and Aghunato police stations in Zunheboto District were declared  ‘disturbed area.’
