Chakhesang Youth Front condemns sexual assault, demands arrest

Phek, October 8 (MExN):  The Chakhesang Youth Front (CYF) condemned the ‘barbaric sexual assault and death threats’ issued against one of its female members in Phek district and demanded the immediate arrest of the accused.

The organisation alleged that the incident was perpetrated on September 24 by one Hekugha Chophy of Tsutoho village in Zunheboto district.

In a statement, the CYF claimed it has come to their attention that the accused has allegedly committed the same offence against the victim on multiple occasions in the past.

The CYF shall not remain a mute spectator but will initiate its own course of action if the perpetrator is not arrested at the earliest, the youth body cautioned, appealing to law enforcement agencies to intensify the investigation.

It said the accuser’s presence in public continues to pose a threat not only to the victim, but to every innocent citizen of the region. The youth body also made a fervent appeal to the public to refrain from revealing the identity of the victim, stating that protecting her should be the utmost priority.

It cautioned that any individual or group found ‘aiding, providing shelter or protection to the accused in any manner’ would be held ‘equally responsible for the crime.’

The CYF urged the public to notify law enforcement agencies of any possible sightings of the accused, adding that its own members could also be contacted for assistance.

Expressing deep concern over ‘rising crimes against women,’ the CYF reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring safety and justice and called upon all right-thinking citizens to cooperate for swift justice.
