KOHIMA, JANUARY 17 (MExN): Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio led the mourning for the passing of Rongsenshilu Jamir, IPS (Retd.), the first Naga to serve as Inspector General of Police (IGP), who passed away on January 16 at Eden Medical Centre in Dimapur. He was 92.
In a condolence message, Rio described Rongsenshilu as a man of principle who lived a sincere and upright life. He was awarded the President's Police Medal for Meritorious Service and was inducted into the Indian Police Service. In addition to his professional achievements, he was widely known for his kindness and compassion.
“In his passing, not only the Ao community, but the entire Naga community has lost a guardian and a father figure. Although he is no longer with us, the sacrifices he made for society's welfare and his contributions to the State will always be remembered,” Rio said.
The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) also expressed their sadness over the loss. NDPP President Chingwang Konyak, in a tribute, described Jamir as a dynamic octogenarian who served selflessly, both during his career and after his retirement. “His legacy of service will always be remembered by the people of Nagaland,” Konyak said, offering condolences to the family, including Abu Metha, Secretary General of the NDPP, who is the son-in-law of the late IGP.
“Jamir’s passing is not just a loss to his family, but to the entire Naga community. As the first Naga IGP, he will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to the welfare of the people and his indelible impact on the State’s law enforcement history. His contributions will forever be etched in the annals of Nagaland’s history. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” read the NDPP's condolence message.
