‘Church needs to play a more crucial role’

Dimapur February 8 (MExN): During the devotional Sunday service of the 74th Annual Session of the Nagaland Baptist Church Council, Rev. Bonny Resü, General Secretary, Asia Pacific Baptist Federation spoke on the theme of the Conference – “Being Rooted in the Word of God” in the evening. The 74th Annual Session of the NBCC began on Friday, February 4 last at Rotomi Baptist Church under the SBAK, Nito Mount Zunheboto, stated a press note issued by Viky Noel Jimomi.
Rev. Bonny Resü, talked about how important a responsibility the church has been given to bring about change in the society – because it is on this rock, the church that Christ is working for the expansion of the Kingdom of God. He said that the church needs to play a more crucial role for uplifting our Naga society and lead the way for change. In his message, Rev. Resü drew his text from the book of Colossians and highlighted the different conditions laid out by Paul to the Colossian Church for following Christ and likened the Colossian church to the present day Naga church – who needs a reminder that Christ is the most supreme and this position should not be changed.
The NBCC paid homage to the services of Rev. Kari Longchari, Director, Peace Affairs, NBCC, who will be retiring from active NBCC ministry on completion of term by according him fond farewell and presenting him with a Certificate of Commendation for services rendered. On Sunday in the morning devotional service, Doshehe Y. Sema, Minister for Power, Nagaland and a native of Rotomi village, shared his experiences with the congregation and stressed on the need for disciplining one’s life – both physical and spiritual to become channels for ushering in change in our society.
Eralier, on February 5 at the inaugural service, the president of the NBCC, Rev. Kuzierang Thoü delivered the keynote address highlighting the various areas under which the theme is to be discussed and solutions worked out. Rev. Dr. Chingmak Kejong, Advisor to the Commissioner, Supreme Court of India delivered the message on the theme “The Word and Social Concern”. He stressed on the controversial argument in Jesus’ dealing with the Pharisees in John 9 and challenged the superficial life of the Nagas – the so-called believers, who have great task ahead of them – to bring about change in the society by considering social concerns of the people as a spiritual challenge for the church.
On the second day, February 5th, Bible exposition was conducted by Kethoser Kevichusa, Lecturer, Shalom Biblical Seminary, Kohima. He drew his text from the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) and is bringing inspiration drawn from the text for practical Christian living for the Nagas. Phutoli Chingmak, Director, Eleutheros Society, Tuensang conducted the workshop for the Church Leaders on the theme “Self-Sustenance of the Local Church”; and Rev. Dr. Chingmak Kejong conducted a workshop for the GBs on the topic “Management of Public Distribution System.”
The denizens of Rotomi Village have a unique programme – an Old Age and Destitute Home, instituted by the villagers themselves without any government help. This was instituted in 1992. The new building for the home was inaugurated by Chotisü Sazo, Parliamentary Secretary for Social Concern, Nagaland – who, interestingly, came to attend the Conference not as a VIP but as a member of the esteemed NBCC Male Choir.
The new NBCC office bearers for the year 2011-12 were elected with Rev. Keviyiekielie Linyü as President and Rev. S. Yevito Jimo and Arenla Longchar as vice-presidents.
