Mon, January 15 (MExN): The Department of Home Guards, Civil Defence and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Nagaland, on Thursday organised the first phase of the seven-day Civil Defence Wardens and Volunteers Training at Town Hall, Mon.
The training, funded by the Directorate General of Fire Services, Civil Defence and Home Guards under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, began on January 15 and will conclude on January 21.
A total of eight instructors and 360 volunteers from six wards of Mon town are participating in the training programme.
Delivering the keynote address, SDO (C) Mon, Ajit Kumar, IAS, highlighted the importance of such training and the positive changes it brings to the community. He said that during any disaster, the community acts as the first responder, and urged the volunteers to attend the sessions regularly, understand the lessons and develop their skills.
Kumar encouraged the participants to share the knowledge gained during the training with their family members, friends and neighbours. He also assured that the district administration would extend full cooperation to support the initiative.
Y Pongba Konyak, President of the All Ward Union, Mon Town, thanked the Government of Nagaland and the Home Guards Department, headed by the district commandant, for organising the training.
Describing civil defense as a life-saving service akin to the Red Cross Society, dedicated to the service of humanity, he said the training would transform untrained citizens into proactive first responders.
Emphasising its role in disaster mitigation, relief and community safety, Konyak encouraged the volunteers to participate sincerely and serve the nation. The programme was chaired by Lipoksashi, SI, while the welcome address was delivered by Lichemse Sangtam, District Commandant, Home Guards, Civil Defence and SDRF, Mon.
