Kohima, December 12 (MExN): The civil defence volunteers training programme commenced at the Agriland Building, A G Colony, Kohima on December 12, bringing together volunteers, officials and trainers for the capacity-building initiative.

Deputy Commissioner Kohima B Henok Buchem, NCS, in his address, stressed the importance of professionalism in disaster response. He cautioned that little knowledge can be very dangerous, emphasising that civil defence volunteers serve as a crucial reserve force for the government during emergencies. Sharing recent seismic observations, the DC noted that a seismic expert at the Mengujuma Railway tunnel site reported more than 46 earthquakes in Kohima within the past year, underscoring the necessity of readiness.

Highlighting the objectives of the programme, Buchem encouraged participants to foster unity, commitment to community service, disaster preparedness, and mutual protection. He reminded volunteers that their role carries significant responsibility and added that they remain a strong asset to society, while urging them to give their full dedication to the training.

Earlier, Wopenthung Kikon, District Commandant, delivered the welcome address. The inaugural session was chaired by Sinlo Khing, Company Commander.
