A clarification statement

Central Executive Council
Naga National Council

In the recently held meeting of the Central Executive Council (CEC) of the Naga National Council ( NNC ) in its office at Chedema Peace Camp, Chedema on 24th November, 2017 discussed and viewed with alarm on certain misleading statements by some Naga groups concerning Naga national affairs. Hence, the CEC felt duty bound to clarify and correct the following to those and to the nation on the fallacious statements;

1. The Forum for Naga Reconciliation: The Forum for Naga Reconciliation (FNR) in its “Naga Reconciliation – A Public Statement” signed by 34 Nagas claimed that “FNR met with NNC/FGN 37 times”. Whereas, per NNC/FGN record met only two times – 29th July,2008 and 14th February, 2009. The remaining 35 times whom and how FNR met with are not in the knowledge of the NNC.

Another surprise is, FNR announced and is organizing to hold “Naga Day” on 10th January, 2018 in coinciding with the date the Naga Club met the Indian Statutory Commission, popularly known as “Simon Commission”. No doubt 10th January 1929 was and is a landmark in Naga history. However, FNR is reminded that Nagas have advanced to more important Naga national days, such as; Naga Republic Day of 22nd March, Naga Voluntary Plebiscite Day of 16th May, Naga Independence Day of 14th August etc. These are hard earned Naga National Days through blood and tears. As such, FNR is advised to go forward, not backward.

2. Lt. Gen.(Retd) Thinoselie M. Keyho’s Comment: The “Comment on the Framework Agreement of 3rd August, 2015” by Lt.Gen.(Retd) Thinoselie M. Keyho in the name of Naga National Council as appeared in the Morung Express on 21st October, 2017 is outrageous and not acceptable by the Naga National Council. Where he stated “We all accept the fact that the NSCN (IM) has done many good and positive things for the Naga nation”. Nothing can be far from the truth then such an irresponsible statement. It is concluded that the writer is not in the right frame of mind in the Naga national affairs, and therefore cannot be trusted.

To refresh the writer’s memory; 1). Formation of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) was a direct violation of Lakhuti Resolution, 2). Attempting to change and re-write the hard won history of the Nagas, 3). Assassination and killing of Naga national leaders/ workers and civilians more than they killed the Indian armed forces, 4). And now, housed and fed by the Government of India at New Delhi and Hebron camp and talking of “shared sovereignty” with a propped up ceasefire and the so-called “Framework Agreement” are not good and positive things for the Nagas.

3. The United Naga Tribes Association on Border Areas; The United Naga Tribes Association on Border Areas (UNTABA) Representation to NSCN(IM) Ato Kilonser as published on 5th November, 2017 in Nagaland Post stated that “… 9 Points Agreement by both the political entity of the Naga people, the then Naga National Council and the Government of India, represented by the then Governor Akbar Ali Hydari and Premier Gobinath Bordoloi of the then Assam Province in June 26 – 29, 1947 at Kohima, the sole political reason on which the Naga people joined the Union of India”.

We are all aware that a 9 Point Proposal popularly known as 9 Point Agreement” was negotiated at one point of time between the Naga National Council and the Assam Governor Akbar Hydari representing India. But finally the said Proposal/Agreement was not accepted by both the NNC and the Indian authority of the day. Hence, it is erroneous and would be committing political blunder to say that “the sole political reason on which the Naga people joined the Union of India”. There is nothing as such on the part of NNC that had committed Nagas to join the Union of India. That is why, NNC representing all Nagas is maintaining and asserting our sovereign right of independence till today. Therefore, UNTABA or for that matter any others should not mis-represent the national position in any forum in future.
