Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio today termed that the coming together of the 60 MLAs in support for Dr Chumben Murry, the consensus People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in Nagaland, as a step towards resolving the Naga political issue, among others.
He was speaking at the PDA’s coordination meeting for the general election to the 18th Lok Sabha 2024 held at Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) Central office, Kohima on April 9.
The PDA comprised of NDPP, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Naga People’s Front (NPF), Independent, NPP, NCP, LJP, RPI and JD (U).
Recalling his association with Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the past several years, Rio described Modi as a visionary man under whose leadership the nation as well as the State of Nagaland has undergone significant development.
He also viewed that despite having the capability to form a government independently, the BJP is forming alliances with regional and smaller political parties, including those without a single MLA or MP, showcasing its dedication to inclusive governance.
BJP not ‘anti-Christian and anti-minority,’ implies Rio
Addressing the propaganda portraying the BJP as anti-Christian and anti-minority, Rio said, “We will never compromise our faith and identity as Christians.”
Despite the propaganda going around and stray incidents, no such incident has taken place in the State till today, he highlighted, emphasising on the importance of individuals to discern the facts.
The Chief Minister also recalled that during the 10-years tenure of the Congress in the centre, minimal development was brought to Nagaland, with the exception of a period of President’s rule in 2008, and urged all to decide and vote wisely.
He further said the PDA aims to propel the State towards growth, development and prosperity through peace and unity, and urged all to exercise their franchise by voting.
Rio also expressed hope for a smooth process of election in the state.
Addressing the meeting, Dr Murry expressed concerns about the perception of BJP being anti-Christian and criticised the Congress candidate for exploiting religion for political gain.
Reading out the manifesto of the Congress, he questioned the party’s promise to legalise LGBTQIA+ rights adding, “I will leave it up to the people to decide if the party is truly pro-Christian.”
Acknowledging the incidences of atrocities on Christians, he said “it pains us and as political leaders we oppose and condemn and look for ways and means to mitigate such sufferings.”
A regional candidate: Dr Murry
Against the backdrop of the hesitancy among the people to vote for BJP, Dr Murry said he is here as a ‘regional candidate.’
Stating that it is time to analyse the past and the next five years, he highlighted the importance for politicians to prioritise peace, development, and progress for society.
Calling the attention to the Naga peace talks which been ongoing for more than a quarter of a century, he asked, "How long can peace process continue? And how long can negotiations continue?"
To this, he affirmed that this (upcoming) Lok Sabha term would be most crucial for the Naga political issue
He added that as politicians, it is imperative to articulate the aspirations of the people and stated: “In the Parliament, we have to keep on talking that solution is a big requisite for development.”
Praising Rio's innovative leadership, Dr Murry acknowledged the positive impact of the policies and programmes implemented in the State, particularly in infrastructure development such as roads, and expressed optimism of further progress.
“We are going to election with the slogan ‘Towards Excellence’ and our society is going through a certain amount of progress,” he added.
Rio’s charismatic leadership has resulted in perception-al change between the Centre and the State, he maintained.
Highlighting the significance of North-East states for India's overall development, Dr Murry reminded of the changes from ‘Look East Policy’ to ‘Act East Policy’ and claimed that during the last five years, more than 600 Union Ministers have set foot in NE states, including over 70 in Nagaland.
With India aiming to achieve economic power status by 2047, he emphasised that "the next five years will bring significant developments" and confidently stated that "the NDA will return to power," questioning, "If we cannot go with the flow, where will we go?"
Acknowledging the anti-incumbency feelings among the youth, Dr Murry advised, “If you analyse the situation of what lies ahead, then you will be able to take decision according to that understanding.”
To this, he urged the youth to understand the situation and consider the prospects for prosperity and peace.
Expressing gratitude for the support of the Chief Minister, 60 legislators, and ex-candidates, Dr Murry said he is standing on solid ground while assuring his commitment to work together if elected.
He called for unity among legislators and ex-candidates in the spirit of the coalition, hoping to secure a substantial vote percentage in his favour. He also sought the love and votes of the people.
Meanwhile, Kuzholuzo Nienu, NPF; Er Kropol Vitsu, BJP; Dr Tseilhoutuo Rhutso, NPP and Kevipodi Sophie, Independent have all assured all out support to Dr Murry.
