
Dimapur, April 20 (DIPR): The Department of Sericulture inaugurated Cocoon Bank for Vanya Silks at Signal Angami Village, Dimapur on April 20.
While inaugurating the new building, Member Secretary, Central Silk Board, (CSB) Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, M. Sathiyavathy, IAS said that Nagaland is a land of intriguing traditional design and motifs, which needs to be produced in mass quality to boost state economy. Pointing out that there are four verities of silk worms (Eri, Muga, Mulberry and Oak Tafar) found in the world of which four are easily found in the state of Nagaland. She said that in terms of silkworm production unit in the country, Nagaland is a major contributor where the state alone contributes 95% in Eri (272 metric ton) and 99% in Muga. However the state needs to improve its technical know-how to enhance quality yarning, dying and processing for mass production. She added that in terms of quality production, the state quality is slightly mediocre which needs to improve to compete with other established country. She said that to discourage farmers selling their products in a cheaper rate at unorganised market, she opined that the state Government needs to uplink marketing facilities with proper prices according to the quality so as to encourage the state farmers and also to provide trainings on both plant development and plant rearing, for silk worm rearing. The available plants are Kessuru, Castor and Tapioca, she added.
Informing that Nagaland state being the third state in the whole country and the second state in the North- Eastern State to established Cocoon Bank after Assam, she said that CSB is under consideration for two more establishment of Cocoon Banks in the state.
Director of Sericulture, Watimongba Walling in his short speech thanked the Ministry of Textiles for the generous contribution towards the new building ‘He is optimistic that with the establishment of this Bank Eri-farmers would be greatly benefited, as earlier farmers sell their products in a cheaper rate in an open market. He said that the new building has been constructed under Catalytic scheme through Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles and the project cost is RS 3.50 lakhs.
Speaking as the special guest, Deputy Commissioner Dimapur, Maongwati said that with the introduction of Look East Policy government is encouraging the people to become economically self-dependent, citing the example of today’s inauguration. He said that a door of opportunity has been widely open for people of the state to undertake business venture like silk worm rearing which we have potential even to up link even to the far –east Asian country and Pacific circle as silk production are on high demand and Eri product are skin friendly and is ideal for both summer and winter. He said that to become economically self dependent, the mindset and attitude of the people needs to be changed from consuming to contributing society.
