Committee on Government Assurances comprising of seven MLAs headed by Kuzholuzo Neinu (Azo) on October 6 undertook on-spot verification to assess the improvement of road works in Dimapur and Kohima under NH-39 as well as 4-lane road from Dimapur to Kohima.
Addressing a press conference at Niathu Resort, Azo said that except for the wear and tear at few places, the works were being carried out satisfactorily. “The work progress is so far so good and quality work is also being carried out for the 4-lane,” he said. He also added that the Committee during its inspection noticed some hiccups on the roads from Nagaland Gate till Zion Hospital junction (2km stretch) but added that the contractors have been urged to repair the roads before Christmas.
Additionally, he also requested the contractors to clean the roads with blowers as a 'Christmas gift'. He expressed hope that the contractors would not compel the Committee to inspect the road again for want of improvement.
Azo said it was high time that Nagas were provided with good roads and was optimistic that the road inspection would set a good precedence since government was serious about quality works and hoped that the contractors would also be serious. “Our presence here shows the seriousness of the government leaders and the department and will impose penalties and cancel work orders as deemed fit,” he added.
Meanwhile, MLA, Toshi Wungtung also said that the contractors were “doing well.” However, he urged them to provide enough space at junctions and entrances to facilitate convenient traffic and public safety on road. He also requested the contractors to remove a particular lamp-post at Zion Hospital junction and relocate to a proper place. According to Toshi, the lamp-post has been erected quite close to a curved road and could endanger vehicular movement and compromise public safety on road.
A representative of T.K. Engineering Consortium Pvt Ltd which is the contracting firm for the particular road said “We are carrying out road construction as per specifications and we are legally mandated to repair the road."
During the inspection, core-cutting machine was also used to measure the depth of the bitumen, which the Committee found to be satisfactory. The Committee members were accompanied by Commissioner & Secretary (R&B), Engineer-in-Chief (R&B), Chief Engineer (NH), contractors and a host of other government officials.
