Kiphire, June 3 (MExN): A community sensitization programme on Environmental Pollution and Human Animal conflict mitigation was held in Hopongkyu Hall, Kiphire town on May 31.
It was conducted by Kiphire Wildlife Division (KWD), Department of Environment, Forests & Climate Change in association with Green Land Society and District Administration, Kiphire.
A press release from Suman WM Sivachar, Wildlife Warden, Kiphire stated the the seminar was followed by hands-on training on paper bag making for women from women societies, women union and self-help groups.
It was part of World Environment Day celebrations being undertaken by the Division upto June 5.
Suman WM Sivachar IFS, Wildlife Warden, Kiphire, delivered a presentation on the issues of human-animal conflict with examples from all over the country and examples from Nagaland.
He also spoke on environmental pollution with special focus on air and plastic pollution, with the theme of this year’s World Environment Day being “Beat Air Pollution” and last year’s theme being “Beat Plastic Pollution.”
He highlighted that women, children and the elderly have been identified as the most vulnerable by United Nations Environment, when it comes to the harmful effects of pollution.
Shayung Phom NCS, DC Kiphire exhorted the participants and spoke about the indigenous use of eco-friendly bamboo cups, tree-leaf plates and paper bags to replace single-use plastic products.
He stated that enforcement of the ban of single-use plastics would be thorough and extended support and help of the District Administration team to all departments involved in the conservation of the environment.
Tsalichem, Secretary, Kiphire Town Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KTCCI) highlighted the current position of the plastic ban in Kiphire.
Reny Wilfred IAS, ADC, Kiphire encouraged the participants on the training and arranged for a meeting of various stakeholders and the participants in order to link the production of paper bags for sale in the market.
The programme was chaired by Viliho Awomi, Women Welfare Officer, Mahila Shakti Kendra, Kiphire.
Earlier, the programme started with an invocation prayer by Alison, Associate Pastor, KTBL. Joyangthong, Chairman, Green Land Society, delivered the keynote address, highlighting on the pollution due to careless human activities. Vote of thanks was proposed by Kheantsu, Secretary, Green Land Society.
A total of 80 participants from Kiphire Akheda Santamlarü Thsingmüjang, Tikhir Women Union Kiphire, Kiphire Sumi TotimiHoho and SHGs took part in the programme. The program was attended by Nyempo Wallim, SDO; Chumpen Murry, EAC; Chenithung Murry, EAC; Sangpang Longkumer, EAC; Khriethozu, EAC of the District Administration; K Kiusang, Range Forest Officer, Kiphire Wildlife Division and members of allied departments.
