Concerns over increasing pollution of Dhansiri

Dimapur, January 2 (MExN): The Dhansiri River Flood Control Board (DRFCB) has conveyed “deep concern” over the increasing pollution of the Dhansiri River in Dimapur and in this regard, has suggested that the Government of Nagaland allocate separate funds for maintenance and management of river to control the pollution and prevent its adverse effects on the environment.   A study of rivers in India by Louis Berger Group Inc. categorized Dhansiri as one of the most polluted rivers in the country. An annual survey conducted by Nagaland Pollution Control Board (NPCB) also found the water quality of Dhansiri degrading every year.   Stating that activities like releasing of sewers/nullahs freely into the river without filteration, rampant dumping of garbage, non-treatment of the river water and dumping of toxic chemicals and pesticides into the river etc. are various factors contributing to the pollution, the Board cautioned that these activities will not only continue to degrade the river but will put an end to the normal life of many citizens. Also warning that it is causing dangerous health issues, the Board propounded an immediate need to do something positive.
