Congress Working Committee (CWC) member Gaikhangam said on Wednesday that Congress party will continue to fight "anti-people policies" of the BJP led government.
The Congress leader was speaking at a one-day joint session of the presidents of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) and Block Congress Committees (BCCs) held at Imphal Congress Bhavan in Imphal. The session, in which senior leaders of the opposition party also attended, resolved to fight anti-people policies of the BJP led governments, both at the Centre and in state, and against all the "fascist forces who are suppressing the voice of the people."
Gaikhangam claimed that Congress party is different from other parties. "The party has a strong commitment to safeguarding democracy," he said, while adding that the party is rising again despite some downfalls in the past few years.
Gaikhangam claimed that Congress is still enjoying the trust of the people not only in the state but also in other parts of the country. "The party will come to power again soon," he maintained.
The CWC member accused BJP of being a ‘double standard party.’ He alleged that BJP is running communal governments at the Centre as well as in the state. "The party will not last long," he further said, adding, "BJP is hoping to build a nation of one religion in a country of diverse cultures and is misleading the people only to achieve its agenda."
The Congress leader asked party workers and supporters not to be discouraged and instead, work with the spirit of democracy.
MPCC president Govindas Konthoujam also appealed to party workers and members not to lose hope and or do anything that would lose the trust of the people to the party. "India is a secular and democratic country and Congress is the party that stands with the commitment to protect the people of the country and democracy," he added.
Former chief minister O Ibobi Singh and other senior leaders of the party were among others who attended the session.
