Kohima, April 7 (MExN): The Konyak Union (KU) on Tuesday apprised Nagaland Director General of Police Rupin Sharma of the prevailing law and order situation in Mon district, expressing grave concern over the escalating menace of drug abuse in the region.

During a courtesy visit and interaction with the DGP at the Police Headquarters in Kohima, the Union stressed the urgent need for the “establishment of a robust, coordinated and result-oriented drug control mechanism to effectively curb the proliferation and abuse of narcotic substances.”

The Union cautioned that the growing drug menace poses a serious threat to the well-being, safety and future of the youth in the district, a press release issued by KU President K Yamao Konyak and General Secretary Wango Konyak.

In order to address the situation, the Konyak Union strongly urged the police to take proactive measures, including the establishment of new check gates in strategic border areas. The proposed locations include Longwa Village towards Pongchao in Arunachal Pradesh, Kangnyu Village, the Chen area, and Monyakshu Village in the Tobu area.

The Union said these measures are essential to monitor and regulate movement, prevent cross-border trafficking, and dismantle networks involved in drug peddling.

Additionally, the KU conveyed its appreciation to the Government of Nagaland and the state police department for ensuring “fair and transparent opportunities” for youth through a competitive examination-based recruitment process for Nagaland Police (GD) personnel.

The Union said, “This commendable initiative reflects a strong commitment to merit-based selection, transparency, and equal opportunity for all eligible aspirants across the state.”

While lauding the existing mechanism, the KU expressed concern for aspirants with educational qualifications below Class 10, who often face difficulty competing on equal terms in written examinations with more academically advanced candidates.

The Union emphasised that such challenges may lead to discouragement among vulnerable youth, and urged the department to devise a practical and inclusive mechanism to ensure equitable opportunities for candidates from diverse educational backgrounds and marginalised sections to serve in the Nagaland Police.

The Union further suggested earmarking a certain percentage of vacancies for sportspersons in police recruitment, in line with practices adopted in other states, to encourage young talent and promote a culture of sportsmanship.

Further, the KU reminded the DGP regarding an appeal letter submitted to the Deputy Chief Minister (Home) on July 12, 2025, for strengthening and upgrading infrastructure under the District Executive Force (DEF), Mon, along with enhancement of manpower.

The Union also stressed the urgent need for the construction of a fully functional Tiru Police Station and augmentation of manpower, noting that the existing setup lacks basic infrastructure for effective functioning.

The KU assured its commitment to supporting all progressive initiatives that uphold fairness, inclusivity, and youth empowerment in Nagaland, and expressed hope that its concerns and suggestions would receive due consideration from the authorities.
