CRPO opposes scrapping of FMR

Tuensang, April 8 (MExN): The Chingmei Range Public Organisation (CRPO) has voiced strong opposition to the Central Government’s decision to scrap the Free Movement Regime (FMR) along the Indo-Myanmar border, stating that the move threatens the unity and peaceful coexistence of the Naga people.

In a press release issued by CRPO president H. Yanchu Chang and general secretary Ebou Naset, the organisation extended its support to the Khiamniungan Tribal Council, Konyak Union and other Naga groups that have condemned the rollback of the FMR.

“The Nagas are known for honesty, faithfulness and being peace-loving people,” the CRPO stated. “However, drawing boundary lines between our own brothers will drastically affect peaceful co-existence in the area.”

The FMR previously allowed border residents to travel up to 16 kilometers into each other’s territory without visa requirements. The Central Government had reportedly reduced this to 10 kilometers before scrapping the arrangement entirely.

The CRPO urged the Nagaland government to stand in defense of what it called a “genuine cause of the Nagas” and appealed to “every right-thinking citizen” to oppose the Centre’s decision and support efforts to reinstate the Free Movement Regime in the Naga homeland.
