CSU seeks probe into alleged chemical spill in Dzümha River

CHÜMOUKEDIMA, NOVEMBER 21 (MExN): The Chakhroma Students’ Union (CSU) has sought the intervention of the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Medziphema, following the alleged discharge of chemical substances into the Dzümha River, resulting in the death of fish and other aquatic species.

In a representation submitted to the ADC, the union said the spillage had severely disrupted the river’s ecological balance and posed health and livelihood risks to residents who depend on the water body for domestic use, agriculture and fishing.

The union said unnatural discoloration, foul odour and the accumulation of dead fish along stretches of the river indicated potential contamination of downstream water sources.

Calling the situation serious, the CSU requested the district administration to initiate an immediate enquiry to trace the source of the chemical discharge and identify those responsible. It also urged authorities to conduct water quality testing to determine the extent of pollution and assess associated health hazards.

The union further appealed for strict action under relevant environmental laws against those found responsible, along with preventive measures to stop further contamination and restore the river’s ecological health. It also sought strengthened monitoring and awareness mechanisms to prevent similar incidents in future.

The CSU said it remains committed to protecting the environment and the wellbeing of the community and requested swift intervention from the administration.
