Damage to telecom infra punishable: Tseminyu DC

KOHIMA, MAY 7 (MExN): In view of recurring disruptions in mobile and internet services in Tseminyu district caused by damage to optical fibre cables and related telecom infrastructure, Deputy Commissioner Tseminyu, Japheth Woch, has informed the public that any damage, theft or interference with telecom infrastructure is a punishable offence under the law.

According to a DIPR report, the DC stated that telecom infrastructure includes optical fibre cables, joint enclosures and related equipment.

The DC directed village councils and local authorities to take responsibility for protecting telecom infrastructure within their respective areas and to create awareness among the public regarding its importance.

He also directed telecom service providers to properly maintain their installations, coordinate with local authorities and ensure quick restoration of services in the event of disruptions. “All incidents of damage/disruptions must be immediately reported to the District Administration and nearest police station without delay,” the DC stated.

The notification further informed that legal action would be initiated against any person found involved in such activities under relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000, including Sections 43, 66 and 66B, and under applicable provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, including Sections 303 (theft), 317 (stolen property) and 324 (mischief).

It further stated that under Section 42(5) of the Telecommunication Act, 2023, damaging telecommunication infrastructure is a punishable offence carrying a fine of up to Rs 50 lakh. Offenders would also be liable for imprisonment, fines and recovery of restoration costs as per the law.
