The Dimapur District Auto Drivers’ Union (DDADU) has introduced an official ‘Rate Book’ to standardise auto-rickshaw fares across the city. The rate book, which was released on January 26, will come into effect from February 1 and will be distributed to all auto drivers, as well as made available at the union office.
Speaking to the media at the union office in Super Market, DDADU President, Tito Yepthomi urged both drivers and passengers to adhere to the published fares, which cover all major locations in Dimapur and extend up to Chümoukedima.
“Passengers should not argue about fares. Simply ask the driver to show the rate book, which will be blue. Whatever the rate is, that is what must be followed. Drivers who cannot produce the rate book will be penalised,” he said. Yepthomi added that passengers may give extra if they wish, but forceful overcharging will not be tolerated.
He confirmed that the rate book was prepared in consultation with the Regional Transport Office (RTO) and district administration, with slight adjustments made to some routes and area names. The published fares comply with government-mandated rates and are provided free of cost to both drivers and passengers.
To address complaints, the union has set up a grievance mechanism, with executive members and parking in-charges stationed across the city. “If you have a complaint, you can approach anyone wearing a blue T-shirt at the parking lot or come directly to our office at the Super Market,” he said. He also confirmed that his phone number and the contact details of all parking in-charges are displayed at parking points.
Yepthomi noted that Dimapur has around 12,000 registered auto drivers, and rules will be strictly enforced. Drivers violating uniform, ID, or fare regulations may be stopped or handed over to the police.
Meanwhile, the president acknowledged the union members for re-electing him for another term of three years. “I and the auto drivers will continue to work for the people of Dimapur. Just as we served in the last six years, we will continue for the next three years,” he added.
