Demand for handing over of Intangki Forest to community

Jalukie | April 8

The Zeliangrong people on Tuesday send a clarion call to both the State Government and under-ground groups, to hand over the Intangki Reserve forest to the owner (Beisumpuikam) as both the parties have failed to protect it. This demand came in during the marathon meeting of the Zeliangrong Baudi at Jalukie Town Hall.

The meeting also decided to approach the State government and underground groups to evict the illegal encroacher from the Intangki Forest within a certain stipulated period.

While recounting the last State Cabinet decision, the meeting expressed surprise that despite the decision to evict the illegal encroacher within a short period, till date the State Government could not carry out the resolution, as such the National park should be returned back to the traditional owner.

The gathering also came down heavily on the district boundary demarcated by R. Ezung Commission in 2002, terming the reports as artificial and not acceptable to the people of Peren district. While creating Dimapur district, the Government didn’t consult with the people of Peren, therefore, it will not move even an inch of land and it should be based on the traditional boundary and there should not be negotiation or adjustment, the meeting agreed upon.

The house also had a deliberation on the ongoing delimitation issue and decided to go ahead with the other five districts. Stating that Peren district has a capacity for 4 constituencies based on population however, it has still only 2 MLA seats.
“It is high time that others should hear our cry”, said the meeting.

It was learnt through some source that the Chairman of the Delimitation Commission 2002, Kuldip Singh, is likely to visit the State for actual spot verification within a short period of time.

Meanwhile, the meeting also registered strong condemnation over the spate of factional clashes at Athibung and neighbouring areas, stating that Peren district is not the battle ground and urged both factions to desist fighting each other in the civilian areas.

It may be mentioned that the meeting was attended by representatives of 97 villages and members of the ZSUN, AZSU. Raitu Ndang, vice president Zeliangrong Baudi chaired the meeting.
