Demolition for redevelopment of Chumu

Dimapur, May 17 (MExN): Workers began demolishing several temporary constructions within 45 feet parameter from the centre of the National highway on May 16. The demolition drive was initiated jointly by the advisory committee of the Chumukedima Town Council (CTC), Chumukedima Village Council and GBs of the area backed by police and district administration as part of an ambitious mission to beautify and ease traffic congestion in Chumukedima area.
The destruction during demolition drive which began from 7th Mile junction till Chumukedima town included properties of several government departments such as Nagaland Stone and Mineral Decorative Corporation, Office of the Executive Engineer (Power) and Forest.
During the demolition drive, concerned authorities have confronted certain recalcitrant owners who have objected to the beautification initiative while majority of the law abiding citizens willfully gave way by deciding to demolish constructions on their volition, informed a press note. The success of demolition drive in Chumukedima has been widely accepted as a trend setter for the remaining areas along the National Highway starting from 7th Mile area till Purana Bazaar. The concerned authorities of the Chumukedima area were undaunted by criticism from certain quarters but resolute to implement its resolution for the general welfare of all concerned.
It may be mentioned here that CTC has issued notification on March 2 asking all landowners to remove constructions within the specific area i.e. measuring 45 feet away from the centre of the National Highway before March 20, 2011. However, in deference to the petition of the landowners during a joint meeting on March 13, CTC has given a grace period of 15 day till April 4 for necessary execution pertaining to demolition of the temporary construction. Today’s demolition drive was carried on the expiry of the stipulated grace period.
The demolition drive was carried in congruence to the resolutions of the Chumukedima Village Panchayat which were passed in the house during 1969, 1974, 1978 and 1982. Mention may also be made here there that earlier reservation for the National Highway was reduced from 75 feet measuring from the centre to 45 feet at present. Yesterday’s demolition being targeted only on temporary constructions, it was informed that eight concrete buildings were likely to be affected during the next phase of demolition drive. They were served a grace period of 15 days for necessary steps to demolish the constructions with a strict warning that such construction would forcibly demolished on failing to comply with its directive.
The demolition drive was headed by CTC chief advisory Thepfulhoutuo Shuya along with his advisory committee, Chumukedima Village Council chairman Beituo Hama and Chumukedima EAC Henok Buchem.
