DGU, JKTM condemn alleged rape in Mkg

Dimapur, October 10 (MExN): The Dimapur Gorkha Union (DGU) and the Jangpetkong Kaketshir Telungjem Mungdang (JKTM) have strongly condemned the rape of a student in Mokokchung on September 30, describing it as a “heinous and inhuman crime” that violates the dignity and safety of women.

In separate statements, both organisations expressed deep anguish and solidarity with the survivor and her family, calling for a swift, transparent, and thorough investigation. They urged authorities to ensure that the perpetrator is prosecuted under the full rigour of the law and that the survivor receives medical, legal, and psychosocial support.

The DGU stated that “the victim must never be blamed or stigmatised” and reaffirmed its commitment to upholding women’s rights and dignity. The JKTM, meanwhile, termed the incident “an affront to the values and morals of the community” and warned that silence or inaction perpetuates rape culture. It cautioned against victim-blaming, stressing that “the responsibility for sexual assault lies solely with the perpetrator” and that consent “must be explicit, ongoing, and voluntary.”

The JKTM also expressed concern over the use of social and digital platforms to highlight the survivor’s personal history rather than the crime itself, warning that such narratives can re-traumatise victims and erode public accountability. It appealed to the media to remain allies in advocating for justice and to avoid framing that diverts focus from the act of violence.
