The Department of Higher Education (DHE), Government of Nagaland, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with India Meteorological Department (IMD), Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India at the Directorate of Higher Education, Kohima on February 26.

The MoU, duly vetted and approved by the Government of Nagaland, was signed in the presence of Temjen Imna Along, Minister for Higher Education & Tourism, Government of Nagaland, Sarita Yadav (IAS), Secretary, Higher & Technical Education, V Lovitoly Sema, (NCS), Ex-officio Director Higher Education, IMD representatives and department officials.

In this MoU, Government of India has decided to install one X-Band Polarimetric Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) in the state of Nagaland at Dimapur Government College, Oriental Colony, Dimapur under Mission Mausam Scheme.

This will augment improvement in the field of weather forecasting and agriculture meteorology more particularly for the Nagaland region enabling for framing better policy planning and public safety in general to save lives and property.

The formal institutional cooperation programme between DHE and IMD will focus on improving the understanding in the field of Urban-Meteorology and atmospheric sciences, and mutually identified new research areas.

This approach will help both institutions to improve the understanding of weather hazards associated with the Nagaland region for better operational weather forecast, the MoU stated.

The IMD and DHE will work together to develop new applications for the mutual benefits.

The partnership is expected to create opportunities for faculty and students of higher educational institutions across Nagaland to engage in research, training, and knowledge exchange in emerging areas of weather and climate science, according to DHE official.

The MoU shall commence from the date of signing and the period of the MoU will be 20 years, or whenever required to amend the same in joint consultation of IMD and DHE.

This collaboration marks a significant step toward strengthening scientific infrastructure in Nagaland and fostering a culture of research and innovation in meteorological sciences for the benefit of the wider community, according to DHE official.
