Kohima, June 11 (MExN): Dikhu bridge in Longleng might as well go for a retirement particularly with the onset of the rains, if something is not done for it's salvage sooner.

Longleng Deputy Commissioner Thele expressed apprehension that the “Dikhu bridge may collapse at any time.”  Speaking of the urgent requirement of the new bridge, the DC also feared that once the Dikhu Bridge is gone, Longleng will be appear almost like an island.

Innumerable  potholes and muddy puddles are the unpleasant  witnesses to the sorry state of Longleng district headquarters road, thereby causing immense hardship to the commuters to cope with the deplorable condition.

Admitting the pathetic conditions, DC Thele said that  the district's administration has to keep on reminding the government for improvement works as well as black topping of the 34 Km stretch road between Longleng and Changtongya. He added that Longleng road is not only in dearth of proper drainage systems but it is the only roadway  in Nagaland which does not possess even a single culvert.

Priority should be given towards the improvement of the Longleng road as this is the lifeline of the people of this region, reminded  Leisha Phom, chairperson, Longleng Town Council.

Due to the lack of good roads, he said, heavy vehicles refuse to ply, thereby hampering trade and commerce activities of the region. The public has been making several pleas to the government for the improvement works, he added. Head GB PL Phom and GB Y. Shingli also lamented that the people have been suffering a lot since many years.

Saying that all round development depends solely on good road conditions, the duo said “Once the road is improved everything will be okay.” Source said that the state government is considering improving the  Tuensang- Longleng road as well as constructing  a new Dikhu Bridge.
