Dimapur Bengali Samaj extends Deepawali, Chhath Puja greetings

DIMAPUR, OCTOBER 19 (MExN): The Dimapur Bengali Samaj has extended greetings to all Sanatanis and devotees on the occasion of Deepawali and Chhath Puja.

In its message, the Samaj wished everyone a “colourful, vibrant Deepawali and a pious, austere Chhath Puja.” It noted that Deepawali marks the return of Bhagwan Ram to Ayodhya after fourteen years of exile in the jungles and the subsequent killing of the demon Ravan.

Highlighting the significance of Chhath Puja, which is celebrated six days after Deepawali, the Samaj stated that it is a festival dedicated to the worship of the Sun. “It is the only festival in which the setting Sun too is revered,” the message said, adding that Sun’s sister, Chhathi Maiya, who is the sixth form of Maa Parvati, is also worshipped as a goddess during the festival.

The Samaj described the observance of Chhath as one marked by “extreme austerity” and said that the festival has Vedic origins, offering “a small glimpse of the Vedic culture.” It further observed that Chhath Puja has now become a global festival and is considered by environmentalists to be “totally environment friendly.”

“May the two festivals fill the lives of the devotees with happiness, peace and prosperity,” the message concluded.
