Dimapur Police reiterates prior permission requirement for rallies, protests

Dimapur, June 5 (MExN): The Dimapur Police has reiterated that prior written permission is mandatory for organising any public gathering, rally or democratic protest in the district, warning that failure to obtain approval would render such assemblies unlawful.

In a public notice issued by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime)-cum-PRO, Dimapur, the police said it fully respects and recognises the democratic rights of citizens to assemble peacefully and express their views.

However, the notice stressed that ensuring public safety, maintaining law and order, and preventing disruption to daily traffic and commercial activities are equally important responsibilities.

Accordingly, the police reiterated that organisers must obtain prior written permission from the competent authority before holding any public gathering, rally or democratic protest. Any assembly conducted without such approval will be viewed as an unlawful assembly, the notice said.

The police also reminded the public that all forms of public gatherings remain strictly prohibited at Clock Tower in Dimapur in accordance with a government order.

Citizens and organisations were urged to comply with the regulations while exercising their democratic rights, the notice added.
