Dimapur (MExN): Only during the last three months, 26 vehicles of various makes were reportedly stolen while 21 were recovered by the police. This statistic pertains only to the vicinity of Dimapur district. Such alarming figures clearly indicate the rampant existence of stolen cars and professional car thieves in the State. According to police sources, a considerable amount of stolen automobiles, with or without valid documents, are plying on the roads of Nagaland. Sources have also confirmed that forged documents are also up for grabs in the black market.
Most car thefts are committed by non-locals. These car thieves are usually very skilled and can even lift a car which has been fitted with sophisticated anti-theft devices. However, the majority of stolen vehicles in the State ultimately land up in the hands of local ‘dalals’ who ultimately dispose off the cars. A wide network of burglars and agents of stolen cars are believed to be operating together in the state.

On condition of anonymity, a police source said that the alarming increase in the vehicular population could be as a result of the booming trade of stolen vehicles. The Police have complained that customers deliberately purchase such vehicles even after coming to know the status of such cars. The obvious reason is that stolen vehicles are made available at a much cheaper rate. The presence of such a ready market has prompted the entry of a large number of stolen automobiles in the State.
