Directorate building of Fire & Emergency inaugurated

Kohima | August 19 : Parliamentary Secretary Prison, Fire & Emergency Services, W. Kithan today inaugurated the most anticipated Directorate building of Fire & Emergency here this morning. The building constructed was completed to a sum of Rs. 94 lakhs.
Parliamentary Secretary Prison, Fire & Emergency Services, W. Kithan said that the fire department was a part of Police force, organized in the later part of 1960s after the Nagaland Secretariat was totally destroyed by one fire incident where since then the department had been bifurcated and functions as directorates from 1990 onward and the subject is entirely in the state list which means all funding had to be from the revenue of the state, thereby growth rate and provisions are slow.
Kithan said the role of Government Fire department is more on the regulations for safety from fires in public places, industries and in multi-storyed high-rise buildings in the metropolis, cities and townships. Asserting that till very recently fire department could not provide expensive, sophisticated equipments for fire fighting as of late, the central government is taking measures to modernize the country wide fire establishment providing means to upgrade fire tenders, equipments in kind so that need facilities reach the desired department of fire. Kithan added that till date there are only nine fire stations which are functional and three under construction, viz-Peren, Longleng and Kiphiri and the state government has plan for opening of sixty four fire stations and a modest training centre for fireman and officers.
The parliamentary expressed hope that the department will give good service to the people in the long run. The programme was attended by Police officials and other government officials.
