DNRE Nagaland on generating electricity environmentally friendly

Kohima | August 22 : Nagaland’s New & Renewable Energy (N&RE) director TS Angami stated that the state’s Directorate of New & Renewable Energy (DNRE) with its ministry at New Delhi has been assigned with the task of generating electricity with clean and environmentally friendly means, such as small hydro power, solar energy, wind energy and bio energy. The department has identified a few SHP sites in the state where energy can be generated without having to compromise with our fragile environment and its ecological balance.
The director stated this during the National Renewable Energy Day in Kohima last week. The director said most of the sites ranges from 30 Kw to 1000Kw, targeted for standalone nature of load where the energy so produced will be utilized for rural localities where accessibility to power grid is not available. On the other hand, wherever there is surplus power generation, the same can be injected into the main grid so that the uses of hazardous fossil fuel for power generation are phased out at the earliest.
The department is presently taking up 1MW HEP at Tsitsung in Mokokchung district and 17 other sites are under S&I stages. Similarly, the DNER is also planning to step up its effort to supplement the existing power grid infrastructure with solar power facility so that cheaper and more reliable source is made available to the common people in the state.
The Director said that the department is currently taking up 56 solar power plants across the state and solar water heater facilities of 3178 sq.mt are being provided to the public. Large quantum of domestic biogas facility is also being proposed from this year so that individual economy is improved and at the same time, the destruction of forest for firewood is minimized. The Director said that wind energy technology has also proven it’s potentially in the field of renewable energy in most of the western world, for which the department is taking up two pilot projects, each of 10Kw- Hybrid in the state.
