DNSU, DCCI disapprove as colleges’ bodies call for bandh in Dimapur on June 5

DIMAPUR, JUNE 4 (MExN): An intimation letter was sent to the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur today on behalf of students of 19 colleges in Dimapur stating that they would impose an indefinite bandh in Dimapur from 10:00am of June 5.

However, both the Dimapur Naga Students' Union (DNSU) and Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) issued statements asserting that they would not allow such a hastily called bandh.

A press note from the DNSU asked all business establishments, government offices and other public service agencies to remain open. “Further, any student, individual or group spearheading the bandh or taking part in the said bandh shall be held responsible at their own risk if any untoward incident arises,” it added. The union while condemning the way in which student leaders were detained by the police in Kohima, extended its support to the issues taken up by the ANCSU. “But the proposed indefinite bandh to be held on June 5 without proper consultation is a hasty step and the surprise indefinite bandh will affect the general public,” it added.

The Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) while sympathizing with the ANCSU’s cause, appealed to student bodies to “use their wisdom and exercise restraint.” The DCCI made clear that student leaders “will be held responsible if any unwarranted situation arises while opening the shops.” It said that the business community will not allow flash bandh without any prior notice and directed all businesses to open. “Any business establishment not following the order will be dealt strictly,” it added. It also informed the district administration and Dimapur Police to make adequate security arrangements.

The letter was sent to the Dimapur CP on behalf of students from 19 colleges, however two of the colleges reached out to the media stating that they were not a part of the call. It stated that the bandh would be imposed until the ANCSU demands are met, while exempting educational institutions, para military forces, emergency services, medical, police, administration and press from the purview of the bandh.

Meanwhile, taking to Twitter later in the evening, the CS Temjen Toy said that the event was “unfortunate” and appealed for avoiding any closure.

“Today’s events were unfortunate and we need to develop understanding and unity. 5th of June is World Environment Day Many schools, institutions and concerned individuals are planning to observe it.  Also, tomorrow is #EidUlFitr.  We appeal to all sections to avoid any closure,” he tweeted.
