Kohima, May 13 (MExN): Naga Hospital Authority, Kohima organized Continuing Medicine Education (CME) on “Cancer” for both the government and private doctors on Sunday evening at Medical Directorate, Kohima with Dr. C. Bhuyan, Medical Oncologist, Dr. B. Borooah Cancer Institute, Guwahati as the resource person. The program was sponsored by GLS Pharma Ltd, Delhi.
The program was oganised to give the latest update of medicine science, and also to fight against the different types of cancer by detecting early stage of cancer before it can spread or multiplying into the body. The objective of the CME was also to keep update with the latest methods of detecting cancer and also to give general awareness to the people to know the warning sign and symptoms.
Dr. C. Bhuyan said cancer is a disease (tumour) which grows out of cells of one’s own body, spreads into the whole body & ultimately kills the individual. He explained that it was very intriguing and enigmatic and it is not just one thing that causes cancer. It is the result of interaction of so many different factors– body’s own factors (genetic) & the environmental factors. It is often triggered by some factors but sustained by some other factors.
Cancer is a chronic disease and results from mutation of a single cell. It takes years to form a tumour from point of mutation, a billion cancer cells may have already formed in the body before it manifests. It’s a very short time from the first manifestation to death. Awareness about it and early diagnosis is the only way to early treatment, he maintained.
Given awareness of cancer and early detection through media platform is very important and helpful to the mass population, as many common people would not be able to identify the causes and symptom when changes develop in the body. Knowing the signals of cancer and going for early treatment before developing would save the life, he said.
Few types of cancer are Breast Cancer, Cervical Cancer, Oral Cancer, Stomach Cancer, Colon Cancer and Neuroblastoma. Oral cancer is one of the most common cancers in the North-east regions, as the people chew tobacco, tamul and pan excessively, he maintained. He also advised to the public to be aware of the 7 warning signals of cancer (see box). Medical care is an Art, Science, Technology and Statistics are tools to perform this art. This art of Medical care goes towards perfection when these tools are used to the optimum, he said.
