Dimapur, April 26 (MExN): A documentary about the pressures and conflict over habitation between man and pachyderm is to go to the Cannes. The documentary ‘This land we call our home’ is directed by Vikeyeno Zao and produced by Indrajit Narayan Dev. The short film has been selected for the 64th Cannes film festival starting May 11 up to May 22, 2011. The 15-minute documentary film depicts the struggles of elephants with development and encroachment on their natural habitats and forestland by man.
An article introducing the documentary was also received here. “With continuous loss of habitat qualitatively as well as quantitatively, elephants are forced to extend their range, and raid crops for their survival. Because of such forays of elephants into villages and agricultural lands, and the human forays into forests, such man-elephant confrontation becomes inevitable,” the article stated.
“Humans and elephants have been competing in these areas for natural resources. The primary conflicts include crop raiding, poaching for ivory, and elephant mortality due to construction of roads for heavy traffic movements through the elephant corridors. Ecological disasters such as soil erosion, flood, destruction of forest cover, and human encroachment have also contributed to the increase in elephant mortality rates.”
Increased population pressures compounded by illegal felling of trees and influx of illegal migrants have sharply compounded the population in the northeastern states, the article stated. It has resulted in increased encroachment in forest areas leading to the intense conflict between man and elephant, the filmmakers added.
