DIMAPUR, DECEMBER 20 (MExN): Communities or neighbourhoods taking the initiative of installing street lighting, at their own expense, are rarely a common venture. However, a group of young and concerned individuals did just that in a locality in Dimapur. A non-profit government registered society by the name of Dorians Society installed 40 units of street lights at important intersections at their locality at Notun Basti (Ao Khel).
The lightings, all energy efficient CFL bulbs alongwith the installation charges cost them Rs. 33, 000, which was pooled from the society’s funds and voluntary donations from well-wishers. Now fully functional, the lightings were formally inaugurated on Tuesday, December 20. The programme was graced by Albert Ovung, SDO, Division II, Dimapur. According to Ovung, a locality coming forward and successfully undertaking such a project in the interest of the general public is an encouragement for all, while setting a constructive trend for others to follow. While expressing his appreciation for the successful completion of the voluntary project, Ovung said that, to the best of his knowledge, this is the first time he has come across a locality taking up such an initiative.
Dorians Society further expressed their gratitude to Ovung and the power department for providing the necessary logistics to complete the installation of the lightings. “We want to just give out a message that if we join our hands and work together anything is possible,” said a working member of the society. “Why only wait on the government or the municipality, we can also play proactive roles… after all such a venture is for the safety and welfare of all,” the member added. The society further thanked the Notun Basti (Ao Khel) Council for their assistance in making the venture a reality.
