Kohima, December 19 (MExN): Two persons were arrested by Kohima police personnel on December 17 for allegedly stealing handbags by distracting their victims in Kohima.
Kohima Police PRO in a press release stated that the duo, Saravanam Marimula Naidu and a minor, both from Maharashtra stole two handbags at different locations in Kohima and were apprehended amidst their third attempt.
During interrogation, they admitted that they reached Kohima on the same day and stole a handbag from a vehicle parked near united traders shop.
“Their modus operandi is that one of them will distract the owner of the vehicle on the pretext of leakage in the vehicle and accordingly when owner of the vehicle comes out and opens the bonnet, the other person steals the bag from the vehicle,” the Police said.
Another bag was stolen from Southern exit gate (Local ground) and kept at Phoolbari which was later seized by Kohima Police. The duo was apprehended during their third attempt from a vehicle.
A case, in this connection has been registered under North PS Kohima vide North PS Case No. 68/2018 U/S 379/511 IPC. The police, meanwhile stated that the accused Saravanam Marimula Naidu was handed over to judicial custody while, the minor has been handed over to an observation home at Kezeike, Kohima.
The recovered the stolen bags were also returned to the rightful owners.
The police further appealed to the public to be more vigilant and report to the nearest police station if such unscrupulous elements or suspicious elements are suspected.
