Peren, May 15 (MExN): In a push to bridge the gap between national health goals and grassroots implementation, a two-day Food Safety sensitisation programme was organised at the village council level in four villages of Peren District on May 14 and 15.

The villages covered under the initiative, part of the ‘Eat Right India’ movement, included Ahthibung, Samziuram, Mhainamtsi and Heningkunglwa, stated a press release issued by District Media Coordinator, CMO Office Peren.

Sukumlo Yanthan, Food Safety Officer, Dimapur, educated attendees on food fortification, explaining how staple foods such as rice, wheat, milk and oil are being enriched with essential vitamins and minerals. The session also highlighted the ill effects of trans fats and emphasised a three-pronged reduction strategy focusing on lowering salt, sugar and oil intake.

In the second technical session, Food Technician Zuthungbemo K Ngullie stressed the importance of reading food labels and clarified a common misconception between medically recommended ORS and commercially marketed ORSL drinks.

He further warned against the repeated use of cooking oil, explaining how the buildup of Total Polar Compounds (TCP) can lead to severe health complications. He also pointed to alarming sugar levels in carbonated beverages, linking them to the rising incidence of Type 2 diabetes among children.

The programme concluded with a hands-on demonstration to detect common adulterants in everyday food items.

The event saw active participation from diverse community pillars, including village council members, ASHAs, Anganwadi workers, Self-Help Groups (SHGs), and church leaders.
