ECC hosts district-level Viksit Bharat Youth Parliament in Dimapur

Officials and students during the district-level Viksit Bharat Youth Parliament under Phase I of the Viksit Bharat Yuva Connect programme held at Multipurpose Hall, ECC on March 10.

Dimapur, March 10 (MExN): Eastern Christian College hosted the district-level Viksit Bharat Youth Parliament under Phase I of the Viksit Bharat Yuva Connect Programme at its Multipurpose Hall on March 10.

The programme was organised by the college in collaboration with the National Service Scheme and MY Bharat under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

The initiative aims to involve youth in discussions on national plans, priorities and development goals. The competition was held under the theme “50 Years of Emergency: Lessons for Indian Democracy”, reflecting on the 1975–77 Emergency declared under the leadership of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Altogether 65 students from 13 colleges in Dimapur district participated in the event. The jury members included Dr Chiben Yanthan, assistant professor at North East Christian University; Dr Yelhi Vero, assistant professor at Dimapur Government College; Mikato Shohe, founder of Cafe Captain Americano; and Dr Salikyu Sangtam, associate professor of Political Science.

Delivering the welcome address, principal Dr Dominic K Khanyo highlighted the importance of youth participation in national discourse and appreciated the vision behind the initiative.

In his exhortation speech, Dr Salikyu Sangtam stressed the importance of good governance and emphasised the need to focus on youth, farmers and the poor while working towards the goal of a developed India.

During the plenary sessions, participants reflected on the history and implications of the 21-month Emergency, stressing the importance of safeguarding democratic values and the supremacy of the Constitution.

In the results, Reshangdi Jidung of SD Jain College secured the first position, followed by Sentirenla V A Peinyu of Unity College in second place and Ikeisikie Kauring of Unity College in third place. 

Kamala Devi and Nilokali, both from Eastern Christian College, secured the fourth and fifth positions respectively.
