EDTC calls for urgent action on dumping site

Dimapur, March 10 (MExN): The East Dimapur Town Council (EDTC) has raised serious concerns over a potential breakdown of sanitation services following a notification issued by the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC).

According to the EDTC press release, the DMC has notified the public that its existing dumping site will be discontinued effective March 30, 2026. The EDTC has highlighted that it currently does not have a designated dumping site for the disposal of municipal solid waste, as required under the Municipal Guidelines and Solid Waste Management Rules, which mandate that every Urban Local Body must have its own designated dumping or waste disposal site.

“If the existing dumping site is discontinued without providing an alternative site for waste disposal, the East Dimapur Town Council will be left with no viable arrangement for the disposal of waste collected within its jurisdiction. Under such circumstances, the Council may be compelled to temporarily halt the collection of sanitation fees and cease sanitation services to the public, as there will be no authorised location to dispose, the collected waste,” the EDTC stated.

The EDTC further emphasised that its sanitation vehicles are already operating under difficult conditions. Transporting waste to far-off locations, the Council noted, would not be practical or feasible due to the distance and the current condition of the vehicles.

In light of the impending crisis, the EDTC has made an urgent appeal to the concerned department to examine the matter and arrange a suitable dumping site for the Council at the earliest “so that sanitation services to the public can continue without disruption.”  The EDTC has also sought the understanding and cooperation of the public on this matter.
