EDTC warns against dumping waste into rivers and drains

Dimapur, May 18 (MExN): The East Dimapur Town Council (ETDC) has warned residents against the indiscriminate dumping of garbage, sewage, pig waste, and other waste materials into rivers, drains, and riverbanks within its jurisdiction, stating that violators will face fines and legal action.

In a press release, the Council said it has observed improper disposal of waste and direct discharge of sewer outlets into rivers and drainage systems, resulting in “serious environmental pollution and health hazards.”

The EDTC stated that any sewer line outlet found directly connected to rivers, streams, or drainage channels would be “strictly dealt with” through penalties and legal proceedings under relevant rules and regulations.

The Council further directed all piggery owners to install and maintain proper waste filtration and sedimentation systems before releasing wastewater. Disposal of pig waste into drains without proper filtration, treatment, or sedimentation process “shall not be tolerated,” it added.

The public, shopkeepers, institutions, and all concerned have been instructed to strictly comply with the directions, while defaulters would be penalised without further notice.
