A one day cultural exchange programme of the different tribes residing in East Dimapur was organised by the East Dimapur Youth Organisation (EDYO), on the theme, ‘unity beyond own communities,’ at Darogajan/Kushiabill, Dimapur on December 3.
Speaking at the inaugural session Azheto Zhimomi, MLA of Dimapur III constituency, appreciated the efforts of EDYO of organising the first ever cultural exchange programme within its jurisdiction. He urged the organisation to continue to make efforts upon improving such events in the future.
For any organisation to function he mentioned that the counselling of elders should be put into consideration along with their blessings and cooperation. Furthermore, Zhimomi noted that East Dimapur has had among the first to be upgraded to a town council. As such, it was pertinent upon the community to maintain peaceful coexistence amongst themselves. “To maintain this peaceful coexistence there should be a sense of respect for one another,” he said.
During the programme, a host of cultural display were presented by the Mech Kachari, Sumi, Garo and Dimasa tribes including folks songs by the Chakhesang, Ao, Tikhir tribes and solo by Aosenla Sangtam. Renowned Bollywood singer NK Naga also made a special appearance to enthral the audience with a number of tunes.
Short speeches were delivered by Khekuto Jakha, Chairperson, Kushiabill village council and President of Darogajan Dimasa Youth Organisation.
Meanwhile, Kanato S Awomi, President, EDYO stated that the aim of the event was to maintain unity among the different communities residing within East Dimapur. He added that initially they had wanted to organise it on November 26 but was unable to do so due to unavoidable circumstances. “The NPSC prelims exam was about to be conducted at that time so we had to post-pone it to December 3 for everyone’s convenience,” he noted.
An evening session was also held where Hekani Jakhalu Kense, founder of YouthNet was invited as the guest of honour.
