Ensure quality workmanship: ESSU to BRO

Aghunato, November 29 (MExN): The Eastern Sümi Students’ Union has appealed to the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) to ensure quality workmanship while implementing the Zunheboto-Aghunato-Kiphire road (100 RCC) under 15 BRTF Project Sewak.

According to a press release from the ESSU on Tuesday, it had received reports of poor quality workmanship along a stretch of the ongoing construction project. However, upon enquiry, the officer in-charge clarified that the stretch measuring about 100-200 metres was paved to test the machinery and equipment.

“The officer assured the Union and public in general that the work will be done as per the detailed project report (DPR),” the release stated.

In this connection, ESSU also drew attention of the BRO on the condition of drainage systems along the project, stating that drainage is “almost nonexistent.” As a result, over the years, the main road regularly “becomes a river” during the monsoon, leading to further deterioration of the road, stagnation of rain water, landslides. The road has thus become narrower, presenting major hazards and endangering the lives of the community, it maintained.

While requesting the BRO to permanently station one JCB excavator in their platoon location at Aghunato to meet emergency requirements, it also appealed the BRO to mobilize their machineries and clear all landslides, rockslides and clogged drainages before starting renovation and carpeting works.

Meanwhile, the ESSU stated that it would closely monitor the work and progress in close coordination with all the civil bodies. It also appealed to all the public to cooperate with the BRO without any hindrance. Any lapses would be taken up with the highest authority with all the evidences, for the welfare and development of the area, it added.
