Mokokchung, March 10 (MExN): The first round of National Deworming Day (NDD) was observed at Government Middle School, A&B Sector, Mokokchung on March 10.

The programme was held under the supervision of Dr Limanaro, District Programme Officer (UIP & RCH), who highlighted the public health burden of Soil-Transmitted Helminths (STH). She stated that worm infestations are a significant concern in India as they interfere with nutrient intake, leading to anemia, malnutrition, and impaired mental and physical development in children.

As part of the central government's initiative to address this issue, the bi-annual NDD is conducted through platforms of schools and Anganwadi centres to deworm all children between the ages of 1 to 19 years.

Dr Suimzenla, Medical Officer of Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK), emphasised the importance of the observance and encouraged the students to consume the Albendazole tablet. She advised them to maintain personal hygiene and ensure a clean environment to prevent the spread of germs.

She further informed that a single dose of Albendazole tablets would be administered to the target age group through educational and anganwadi institutions. “The objective of observing NDD is to ensure every child in India is worm-free,” Dr Suimzenla added.

The programme was followed by administering of Albendazole tablets and health screening by RBSK team.
